My thoughts on Juneteenth becoming a national holiday.
SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
This very act cheapens the experience of those enslaved men, women and children who were forced to endure being someone else’s property for almost an additional 3 fucking years, having their labor and the ability to provide for themselves and their families stolen.
The signing and the subsequent result of Juneteenth becoming a national holiday is an extremely hollow gesture that benefits not a DAMN BLACK PERSON. We are being used as pawns to appease those in power who get off on dangling carrots in our faces and expecting us to be satisfied with these cheap ass platitudes. Nah son!
Even though this act has been made official by President Joseph Biden, it does not remotely help any Black people, our loved ones nor our communities.
It does not release thousands of Black men from jails who are innocent or waiting in jail cells due to lack of resources to pay bail.
It does not bring clean water to Flint, Michigan.
It does not bring back Breonna Taylor and countless other Black folks who have been murdered thus stolen from us by folks who would treat their damn dog better than they would ever treat us.
It does not assist Black folks in Texas, Georgia, Mississippi nor Alabama who are being assaulted daily by legislators who are making it increasingly harder to vote.
President Biden, Madame Vice President Harris, members of congress as well as the Congressional Black Caucus should be demanding immediate action on the following priorities:
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act
Fair, equitable, and affordable housing
Free health/mental/dental/vision care for all
Free educational day care for all
Student loan forgiveness
Reproductive justice
Access to birth control and abortion
Safety for and specific resources for Black LGBTQIA teens, especially protections for Black trans women
Livable wages starting around $20/hr or more depending on location
Free community college
Free breakfast and school lunches for kids
Programs to provide adequate jobs, resources and housing for returning citizens
Police abolition/reform that is restorative and community building in nature
Mind you, this is not an exhaustive list by far. These are actions that can change lives immediately without some think tank or 5 year, million-dollar research programs to tell us what is wrong. This shit can be done ASAP.
I’m tired y’all! I am tired of being a pawn in the American dream that is not intended for me and mine. We must hold our elected officials’ feet to the fire and make them do what is right for all of us.
